Wish us luck!

May 9, 2021

On the Friday before Whit Sunday, hundreds of brass bands converge on villages in the North West of England to take part in a series of competitions which have been referred to as ‘the greatest free show on Earth”.

The Whit Friday Contest has been held annually since the late 1800s, attracting brass bands from around the UK. Each village holds a contest where the brass bands will play two marches, one as they march through the village to the stage and then a second, ‘Contest March’. Each ‘Contest March’ is scored by an adjudicator who judges without seeing the band.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this year’s Whit Friday Contest has once again been canceled. However, thanks to technology, Foden’s Brass Band will be hosting an online Whit Friday Contest. This is wonderful news for the Houston Brass Band as it will enable us to enter the contest for the first time.  In fact, this will be the first-ever contest entered by the Houston Brass Band!

Foden’s Brass Band has received so many entries this year (120) that they will be broadcasting this event over two nights, May 28 and 29. Once we have the broadcast schedule, we will announce the time you can hear our contest performance of Rimmer’s “Honest Toil’.

Wish us luck!!
