Young Brass Soloist Competition

The Houston Brass Band is proud to announce the Sixth Annual Young Brass Soloist Competition.
This event is open to brass-playing students in junior division grades 7 to 8 and
senior division grades 9 to 12.

The Sixth Annual Young Brass Soloist Competition will be held on May 16, 2020

The Judges

The Senior Division of the Fifth Annual Competition held in 2019 was judged by these esteemed members of the Houston Symphony: 

  • Mark Hughes, Principal Trumpet
  • William VerMeulen, Principal Horn
  • Allen Barnhill, Principal Trombone
  • David Kirk, Principal Tuba

Judging the Junior Division was by a panel of musicians from the Houston Brass Band. 

Selection particulars

Selection 

Our judges are interested in hearing you perform a piece that can be played with beautiful musicality. This consideration is more important than challenging technical components.

Duration 

Senior division – ten minutes (maximum)

Junior division – eight minutes (maximum)

Entrants are strongly encouraged to perform with piano accompaniment (piano provided). With prior written notice, an accompanist will be provided at no cost to the entrant. 

Prizes

In addition to the cash prizes below, there will be exclusive performance opportunities for the winners of each division.
