2019 Young Brass Soloist Competition

The Houston Brass Band is proud to announce the Fifth Annual Young Brass Soloist Competition.
This event is open to brass-playing students in junior division grades 7 to 8 and
senior division grades 9 to 12. 

The Event

This event will be held on
Saturday, May 18, 2019
at the Lanier Middle School
2600 Woodhead Street
Houston, TX 77098

The Judges

The Senior Division will be judged by esteemed members of the Houston Symphony: 

  • Principal Trumpet Mark Hughes 
  • Principal Horn William VerMeulen
  • Principal Trombone Allen Barnhill
  • Principal Tuba David kirk

Judging the Junior Division will be a panel of musicians from the Houston Brass Band. 

Selection particulars

Selection 

Our Judges are interested that you perform a piece that can be played with beautiful musicality. This consideration is more important than challenging technical components. Choose something beautiful, where you can sing!

Duration 

Senior division – ten minutes

Junior division – eight minutes

Entrants are strongly encouraged to perform with piano accompaniment (piano provided). With prior written notice, an accompanist will be provided at no cost to the entrant. 

Prizes

In addition to the cash prizes below, there will be exclusive performance opportunities for the winners of each division.
